This publication tells the fascinating story of Walpole’s friendship with Agnes and Mary Berry; he was in his seventies, they were in their twenties, yet they formed a close, and mutually advantageous, attachment that lasted to Walpole’s death in 1797 and indeed beyond as Mary Berry was responsible for the posthumous publication of Walpole’s works. The paper is written by John Beardmore, who gave us an excellent talk in 2003 on which this paper is based.
